Some sensors, such as Winbond’s and AS99127F support variable fan speed, as do other sensors from Maxim, Myson, Analog Devices, National Semiconductor, and ITE, but the hardware manufacturer must connect the relevant pins to some additional circuitry, but not significantly. It can change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered an extra feature). SpeedFan can also access SMART information for hard disks that support it and display hard disk temperatures when supported. By configuring it properly, you can allow it to change fan speed based on system temperature. It monitors temperature from several sources. FanControl is a hardware monitoring software that can access temperature sensors, but its main feature is that it can control fan speed – depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and hardware – according to your PC’s internal temperature, thus reducing noise and power consumption.
